3 Exercises to Help You Beat Neck Pain

Neck pain can range in severity from a mild ache to sharp shooting pains, but, if you have it, it can really diminish your quality of life. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to alleviate the pain. Below are 3 simple exercises which can help you to combat your neck pain. While these exercises may seem to focus on other areas of your body such as the feet, hips and thighs, stretching these areas can help to reduce neck pain.

Legs on a chair

Lie down with your back flat on the floor and elevate your legs by placing them on a chair so that your knees and hips are at 90 degrees to each other. Next, place your arms on the floor at about shoulder level, with the palms of your hands facing upwards. Hold this position for a few minutes. This exercise helps to align your head, neck and shoulders, which in turn releases pressure which has been placed on the neck muscles.

Legs up against the wall

Lie down with your back flat against the floor and lift your legs until they are vertical against the wall. Your rear should now be up against the base of the wall and your body should be in an L shape. Once you are in position, spread your feet so they are around a hip-width apart and start to tighten the muscles in your thighs while pulling on your toes. Hold this position for a few minutes, while repeatedly tightening and releasing your thigh muscles. This exercise will cause your back to extend against the surface of the floor which will stretch the muscles in your upper back and neck.

Back against the wall

Sit down next to a wall with your legs outstretched and your feet a hip-width apart. Press your back up against the wall and pull you shoulder blades together. next, with your head leaning back against the wall and your feet straight, flex the muscles in your thighs. Hold this position for a few minutes until the pain begins to lessen. This exercise is designed to work on the muscles in the shoulders and upper back, loosening them up and relieving pressure on your neck.
